One Essential for Every Mommy's Medicine Cabinet
My dear Hubby spent most of yesterday getting sick to his stomach. Then, in the wee hours of the morning, my eldest daughter, Lily, started throwing up. My mom reminded me of an old remedy for stomach ailments that my Grandmother always swore by, activated charcoal. I have been researching quite a bit about it, and find it to be just fascinating. After experiencing a horrible bout of food poisoning this past January, I should have made getting activated charcoal a priority! Nausea, tummy aches, food poisoning, heartburn and even vomiting can be stopped in a matter of minutes by taking some activated charcoal. It works by soaking up toxins in the body, allowing you to painlessly expel them. Needless to say, this mommy isn't going to be without this amazing product again. We ordered some activated charcoal today and I hope to review it soon! It is so important to be prepared especially as winter approaches (as well as the flu, stomach bugs, etc.) I also am researching if this can be taken during pregnancy to help cope with morning sickness. I am not currently expecting, but would love to have something natural that would help me to better cope, should the Lord bless us again. During all four of my pregnancies, I have had severe nausea and vomiting spells. I am so hopeful about this product!
Have you tried activated charcoal? I would love to hear your experience.

I have heard of it and a friend of mine swears by it when she's pregnant. I am currently 15 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing morning sickness like never before in my other 2 previous pregnancies. I am really going to try some of this out as she says it is amazing and I am running out of relief!
Thankfully we haven't had to use it very much, but I keep some on hand just in case. Joel was bit by an insect over the summer. It began swelling and scabbing. We thought it was a brown recluse bite. I put charcoal poultices on it hourly. While it did turn his leg black, I do think it helped.
We have tried activated charcoal capsules for food poisoning before, but they did not work because we just threw them right back up (which was not nearly as pleasant as swallowing a sealed capsule, if you know what I mean...).
From what I have read, it works best in fighting food poisoning when taken BEFORE you actually get sick, i.e. if you think you might have eaten something bad because you feel sick or someone else has gotten ill. Once you are throwing up and suffering other symptoms, it's not supposed to work any more. Which is what our experience was.
I have never thought about using it as a poultice for stings, or to prevent morning sickness, but that sounds like it would be worth a try. I know a lot of my extreme nausea is caused by the excess amounts of stomach acid I produce when pregnant. If I try it, I'll let you know how that goes.
Thanks for the food for thought! :)
I've never even heard of it, but it sounds like it's definitely worth looking into! Two of my children were throwing up last week and it's hard when there's really nothing that you can do to help them. I'm anxious to find out how you like it! Where did you order it from?
When I was pregnant with Emma I had an upset stomach that would not stop! My MW suggested charcoal but we lived in the woods and there was no way to get it quickly. So she suggested to eat some really burned toast. As bad as it was it worked immediately. Since then I have kept a bottle of charcoal pills on hand. I am not sure about the activated part though.
My MIL loves it too! They use it in ER's a lot as well. Though I'm with the previous commenter...don't use it when vomiting! LOL HORRIBLY messy stuff. Ick.
Thank you, ladies, so much for sharing your experiences with activated charcoal. I am learning so much! The general consensus sounds like it is great for an upset tummy, but not for someone who is already vomiting. Blessings, friends!
We use AC a lot around here! Gave it to hubby when he was coming down with the stomach bug and his didn't last near as long as mine (because, ahem, I forgot to take the AC!)
We use it a lot for Herxheimer Reactions when our son has yeast-die off. He gets so clammy and sick, so a few capsules of charcoal are essential.
