According to a variety of studies, lunch meats containing nitrates or nitrites can increase one's risk of cancer by about 67%. Leukemia increased 700% when children consume hot dogs regularly. Nitrites and Nitrates are commonly found in bacon, sausage, hot dogs, lunch meat, and pepperoni. Once I learned of the increased cancer risk associated with these foods, I sought to eliminate these foods from our diet/find healthier alternatives. For the past several months, I have been purchasing Hormel's nitrite/nitrate free lunch meat . I am excited to see that they also carry uncured pepperoni, which would be great for pizza night. I am so excited that these products are highly accessible; even my local Walmart carries these! If you still eat traditional lunch meat, I highly recommend finding a nitrate/nitrite-free alternative. I received no compensation from Hormel, nor a product to review. This is just a heart-felt recommendation from a fellow Mom seeking to raise healthy children.

Love this lunch meat! They used to make a nitrate free bacon, but I haven't been able to find it lately. I wonder if they quit? We've gone to an organic turkey bacon to avoid the nitrates...
I get that kind! I was so excited to see they made something like that. The organic turkey is so expensive.
I have used this brand for years. Their bacon is good too. I also try to use diff. nut butters, couscous, farm eggs, etc. for lunches to cut down on lunch meat!
I also started buying this lunchmeat when I found it in Wal Mart. I wish I could find nitrate free pepperoni and bacon....that doesn't cost a fortune or having to travel to Whole Foods to get, which is 2 hours away.
I like to roast a chicken, shred it it and use it for "lunchmeat".
Jes~ Great tip! I wish I could find the nitrate-free pepperoni and bacon, too!
We have been eating this for a year now. Love it.
Thanks for the tip about Hormel! I've also been buying meat that is precooked (like a breast of chicken) with no additives and having the deli slice it into lunch meat for me. I found you via the blog hop! :)
We also use that lunch meat, the only kind we buy. Since the organic brands are so expensive, buying this brand makes me feel better that all those extra additives are in it. Our grocery store had the pepperoni on sale (cheaper that the other kinds) for 4 for $5 so I stocked up. Thanks for sharing with Healthy 2day Wednesdays! Hope you'll participate this week!
