Dehydrating Basics: Making Healthy, Frugal Snacks at Home

My little ones and I love dried fruit. We don't love the expensive price, extra sugar, and preservatives, found in most commercial varieties. Making your own dehydrated snacks is easy and very nutritious. I still need to save up for my dream dehydrator, the Excalibur. In the meantime, my in-law's are very graciously letting me borrow their Excalibur dehydrator, on occasion. It was so easy to use and made such tasty snacks!

1. Gather ripened fruits or vegetables.

My husband picked up about 7 pounds of bananas for .39 cents a pound. Sometimes, we can find over-ripe bananas, locally, for only .19 cents a pound! We also used one bag of apples.

2.Slice Fruits or Vegetables.

3. Place Slices on Dehydrator Tray.

My little ones loved placing the fruit on the tray!

4.  Dry fruit
I dried my fruit at 105 degrees, which took  longer than normal, but it helped to ensure that all of the enzymes were intact. Enzymes are the life force within foods, which aid us in digestion. Dehydrators cost about 3-5 cents an hour, so running them for a few hours longer didn't cost much.

The fruit turned out to be nice and chewy.

I also made a few fruit leathers, by pureeing two bananas and two apples in my Vita Mix.

5. Enjoy your Goodies!

Unfortunately, most of these snacks were gone after just one day! I plan on making a bunch of dried fruit for my little ones, for upcoming trips. It is a great way to eat healthier and frugally, while traveling!

The Importance of a Shower Filter

My husband recently ordered us a KDF shower filter. This has been a very important investment in my family's health, in many ways. I have read a variety of health scholars who have stated that it is even more important to filter one's shower/bath water, than to filter one's water. Our skin is our largest organ, and whatever we wash/bathe in, literally penetrates into our pores. Also, the chemicals have been found to vaporize in the shower, and we inhale them through our lungs, which enters into our bloodstream. I was shocked to read that the level of chlorine in most tap water is equal to, or greater, than that of  a swimming pool. A major side effect of inhaling chlorine is fatigue. We have used this filter for about a month now, and we love it. I used to feel tired after showering, and I have noticed feeling more invigorated, since using a shower filter.

Staying Healthy During the Holiday Season

Illnesses tend to be rampant throughout the winter months. These months also tend to be a time when our immune systems are weakened, because we have consumed too much sugar. The following are a few ways that I will be strengthening my immune system, during this holiday season.

Lemon Water

During the night, our body is naturally cleansing. The first thing we eat/drink is vitally important, as we are "breaking the night fast". The first thing we drink bathes our cells. So, it is very important to drink a tall glass of water, preferably with some freshly squeezed lemon juice, first thing. It is a natural de-tox, which is very gentle.

Probiotic and Organic Yogurt

When I am concerned about potential illnesses, I try to make certain that I take a probiotic. Organic yogurt often contains live cultures, which are wonderful illness preventatives. Sugar can kill the live cultures, so make sure that it is plain yogurt. Plain yogurt can be sweetened with fresh or frozen fruit.

Supplements

I try to make sure that I take my multi-vitamin very diligently, during the winter months.

Extra Salads

I just recently started having a big, delicious salad, every day at lunch. I enjoy it, so much! My husband has even requested that I send him one, each day, in his cooler. I love to use artisan lettuces, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli, and any other vegetables that I have. It is so much fun to devise new salad creations. For salad inspiration, check out Tammy's salad recipes. Eating raw before eating cooked meals helps to supply the necessary enzymes for digesting your cooked food.

Exercise

Sometimes I have high goals to exercise five days a week. Then, I tend to get frustrated and give up when that plan doesn't work out. Instead, I am making a goal of exercising three days a week. Hopefully, I can stay more committed to a plan that has more "wiggle room". Exercise enables your body to work at an optimal level.

Daily Green Smoothies

Green smoothies are high in omega 3's, which can boost your immune systems immensely. Green smoothies are high in fiber, which helps to flush the toxins out of your body.

Healthy Snacks

Immune-Boosting Guacamole  is a terrific, healthy snack! I like to have plenty of fruits and vegetables ready in the refrigerator, so little hands can always find something nutritious to snack on.

Limit Sweets- Make Healthier Treats

It can be challenging to eat healthy with so many delectable sweets around. I am trying to limit the unhealthy sweets. For example, rather than drinking hot cocoa every night, I can limit my little ones to twice a week. That way, it is special and they can look forward to it, yet they aren't weakening their immune systems by drinking it daily. Other nights, we can enjoy a cup of herb tea, while snuggling up and reading a book together. Healthy treats can be substituted for unhealthy snacks. Blend up some frozen bananas in a blender for some yummy "banana ice cream". It is so sweet and has the consistency of soft serve ice cream.

Pack Homemade Snacks while Traveling

I am planning on borrowing a relative's Excalibur dehydrator, before traveling this year. That way, I can buy bananas at.19 a pound when they are over-ripe, and dehydrate a bunch of them! Dried fruit is always easy to pack. I loved Donielle's post (including recipes) about packing real food while traveling.

How do you stay healthy during winter? I would love to hear your tried and true tips! Many Blessings!

Earn $10 Gift Cards!

As I have mentioned before, one of my favorite ways to fund Christmas, without spending cash, is through earning gift cards to places such as Amazon. Swagbucks is a terrific way to earn Amazon gift cards. Within the past three months, I have earned enough gift cards to buy some nice Christmas gifts for my family. As a stay-at-home mom, I really appreciate finding a way to pay for gifts and learning items, without spending money, which my husband works so hard to earn. Shop It To Me is offering a  $10 gift card (to Amazon, Old Navy, Starbucks, etc.)  for every 10 referrals you send their way. What is terrific is that you can receive an unlimited amount of gift cards; it completely depends upon how many of your referrals sign up.

I would love to hear what programs, such as Swagbucks and Shop It To Me, that you have earned gift cards from.

My referral link was used in this post.
