I have been trying to follow the Brewer diet, throughout this pregnancy, to help to prevent complications. I also use a few supplements to enhance my diet. I certainly have some treats every once, in a while, but overall, I am trying to grab healthier snacks, like carrots and hummus. (Rather than a tub of ice cream....)
Rainbow Light Prenatal
I stay on this vitamin 24/7. Since I am always pregnant, nursing, or both, I take this all of the time. I believe that I have been on it for about four years, now. (It was then that I realized that the pre-natal vitamins from my doctor's office, was laden with aluminum.) The cheapest place that I have found to get these vitamins is here, for only $25.77. This is 150 pills, which lasts about 5 months. This averages about $5 a month, which I feel is extremely reasonable for maintaining health. This multi-vitamin contains ginger juice (to help with nausea), red raspberry leaf extract (to tone the uterus for childbirth), spirulina, and all of the important vitamins and nutrients for nourishing a growing baby. My midwife said that my levels all look really good and she was proud of me for staying on a good pre-natal all of the time. She mentioned that some of her clients are really worn out at their post partum visit, because they are nursing and have abandoned taking a good vitamin. It is so vital that we take care of our health, so we can have strength to help others.
Fish Oil
The benefits of fish oil are manifold. It is important for growing babies to have adequate dosages of Omega 3. It has also been found to help prevent post partum depression. Our entire family takes a teaspoon or two daily, followed by a nice swig of orange juice.
Herbal Iron
My daily multi vitamin already contains the amount of iron that I need, but if I am feeling particularly fatigued, I will take some Herbal Iron. It has a fruity flavor, which tastes delicious. My hemoglobin levels were low at the end of my last pregnancy, and this helped my levels to exceed where they needed to be. I have found this to be one of the most affordable liquid irons. (I prefer liquid iron because it allows your body to absorb it faster than in the pill form.)
Amazing Grass Green SuperFood All Natural Drink Powder
This powder mixes with juice or water to make a very nourishing drink. I only drink this on occasion, and I need to increase my dosage of this to at least twice a week. It contains: Organic wheat grass, organic barley grass, organic alfalfa, organic spirulina, organic spinach, organic broccoli, organic chlorella (cracked cell-wall), Organic acai, organic maca, organic carrot, organic beet, raspbery, organic rose hips, pineapple, green tea, acerola cherry, Organic flax seed powder, apple pectin fiber, FOS (from cherry root), L. acidophilus, alpha and beta amylase, protease, lipase, lactase, cellulase,Siberian elethero root, and peppermint.

My MW and I were laughing at my prenatal the other day. When she got to the question about prenatals and she asked how long I had been taking my prenatal all I could say was um...years. Like you I've either been nursing or pregnant for almost 4 years...my entire marriage. LOL. (we were blessed to get pregnant during the first week of our marriage). : )
I use the Amazing grass green super food, I mix mine with vanilla rice milk and it is actually really good. I also take a prenatal vitamin and folic acid, even though I am not pregnant, so when I am I will have already in my system from the beginning. I take a b complex vitamin too.
Funny that you mention Amazing Grass! I have the chocolate powder for the girls and they hate it so I've been trying to drink it lately...I can see why they don't like it though. LOL
I've heard good things about Rainbow Light prenatals! I'm hooked on Vitanatal for their herbal content. I also totally agree with you about a fish oil supplement, though we specifically do Cod Liver oil for the high vitamin content (actually got started on it when Ivey was having dental issues). I take alfalfa supplements for my iron and increase it at the end of the pregnancy (along with drinking more pregancy tea, also high in iron).
Emily,
How terrific that you stay on a great pre-natal. It really makes a huge difference!
Brynna,
I meant to put that we use Cod Liver Oil, too. When I had trouble raising my iron levels, I used alfalfa and herbal iron. I think they blended well to successfully raise my hemoglobin levels.
I do try with the amazing green grass; there are so many great benefits, I need to just go with it. ;)
Delilah,
Mixing it with vanilla rice milk sounds scrumptious; I definitely need to try that! You are so wise to be taking such diligent care of your body. Blessings!
Brynna, We have the chocolate one too for my children. I don't know what you mixed it with, but we use vanilla almond milk and my three love it. So if you haven't tried that, it is worth a try.
I loved seeing what you use! I'm going to look into them. Here is my list--SuperMom vitamins with additional calcium and folic acid, red raspberry leaf capsules, Super Omega 3-6-9, and vitamin D. Magnesium if I need it, which I usually do. lol
BTW--Family Driven Faith is awesome so far!
Homelover2~
It sounds like you are taking so many important supplements! I need to start taking Magnesium too! I am so glad that you are loving the book! Many blessings!
