A Great Article for Over-Abundant Milk Supply
I have been doing quite a bit of research due to my "problem" of too much milk. I am so thankful to those of you who have given me tips, chatted with me, and given me support. I have had this problem often, during my 52 months of nursing, but it seems that the fact that I had oatmeal, yesterday, put me over the edge in excess supply. If you ever need to make more milk, eat oats! Boy, does that work for me! (I had read about that a long time ago, but forgot. Last night, when nursing the baby, I was researching about over-supply and was reminded about oats.)
It seems that the internet is full of tips for a small milk supply, but lacks much information on how to help with an over-abundant supply. For future reference, this article was really helpful to me. I am trying to take it easy, sip a lot of peppermint tea, stay hydrated, use compresses, nurse baby in different positions, etc.. I do not have a pump, yet, so I am doing what I can. Running out to the store, to buy a pump, would have probably put me over the edge into full-blown mastitis. When the consignment sale starts this next month, I am definitely looking into a quality breast pump. (If I do not need to buy one before then.)
I do have to chuckle at some of the funny recommendations....I was told to eat a ton of Altoids to help with over supply. Everyone will know I am coming from five miles away. Here comes....peppermint! I am pretty desperate at this point, so I might have to go back to my regimen of eating garlic cloves to ward off any possible infection. Now I know why I need the Altoids! Good thing these things all work together!
Have a blessed day!

I left a comment about pumping yesterday too....I have had mastitis to the point of 103+ fever and being completely bedridden several times before I got a good pump (good being the key word, I had tried several others out before and it didn't work at all). I did get the medela double electric one, it is pretty expensive up front, but I got mine on sale and used cashback at ebates, and they seem to hold their resale value very well. I have had it about 4 months and haven't had mastitis again since I got it. SO, if it is a serious issue, it might be worth it to consider the good pump, it certainly has been for me, and has more than paid for itself (not to mention I'm not having to take all the antibiotics, etc. for mastitis, my husbands time off of work when I was in bed).
Careful on the garlic... I have consistently found that garlic increases my milk supply.
I hope you find a happy medium! This has been the only nursing relationship where I haven't struggled with a low milk supply. I have been so blessed to be able to truly enjoy Eliza and my special nursing relationship. It's like a breath of fresh air. And I pray that for you, also.

Becca,
Thanks for sharing your experience with me. Thankfully, I have never had a fever to accompany any engorgement.I hope I never will experience it, as it sounds so difficult. I took one cup of sage tea, yesterday, and I still have a really great milk supply, but it just helped to make things a bit more bearable.
Thank you, Andrea, for the heads up! I think I will be careful with the garlic. I have so enjoyed nursing all three of my littles. There just seem to be some bumps in the road of making too much milk. Though nursing isn't without it's challenges, it has been such a wonderful experience for me! Thanks for your sweet wishes.
I have the overproduction problem mostly in the first months of nursing, but I have found that even though I'm afraid to pump for fear of making it worse, sometimes just putting the manual pump on there and not actively pumping just lets enough of the milk out to relieve the engorgement enough to stay comfortable. I have let it go before without pumping and wound up with clogged ducts which are CRAZY painful, so don't let it go too long!
I hope you find some good remedies!
Thanks, Catherine! I never was very successful with pumping (I have only tried after my oldest child was born.) I am planning on getting a decent pump and trying. Blessings!
I'm afraid I'm not any help...I have to fight desperately to keep my milk from completely drying up at 3 months postpartum. I wish there was some way to spread the supply around. That would help both you and me! :)
Laura,
I definitely wish that there was a way to spread the supply around. I am so thankful for some herbs that help alleviate some of the pain.:)
I will definitely be bookmarking that article for future reference as I eventually have the same problem. Right now I'm just worried about getting my "supply" up and maintaining as Abbi is not nursing well at all :(.
