Fun at a Ranch
We were blessed to attend a lovely ranch today, where the children got to feed the animals. We also took a 2 mile walk on the trails, so this mama is starting to get into shape. lol Today was a lovely time to just relish being with each other, and it was such a wonderful time!

The three loves of my life. (Plus sweet baby on his/her way!)

Proud as a Peacock!

This bear just cracked me up. He is just too domesticated. He acted just like a dog!
That poor hog! The children tried to throw the food to him, but it just did not make it over the fence.

I was amazed by how gracefully this ostrich ate the bread we fed it! It's neck bends as though it is courtseying.

Just look at those tailfeathers; they looked like a Victorian fan to me.

Birthing Preparations

I have been reading Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way, since it has come highly recommended by several people. I had heard that it was just as good as taking Bradley Birthing classes, so I tried to save myself the $200. But as I have been reading it, I have found helpful jems of birthing wisdom, yet I doubt that I will remember it all during the birthing process. So I started to get anxious, as I know I need a well equipped (husband) coach in order to birth naturally in a hospital. The lady who teaches the Bradley classes was new to the area, and wasn't going to start classes for quite a while. But then, I was so ecstatic to learn that she is going to start them in 2-4 weeks, and the course will end before my due date. I really feel that the Lord has worked this out, so that I can really learn the techniques prior to birth. My husband is completely willing to spend the money so that we will both be prepared to have a natural birth. The next thing which I need to do is really have a frank discussion with my ob about natural birthing. I need to find out if I have to lay down in the hospital bed, right when I get there. I also want to find out about if they can just use the external fetal monitor intermittently, rather than constantly. It is easy to tend to be confrontational when doctors want to make everything so "medicalized" but occasional fetal monitoring is something I am willing to compromise about. Also, I want to know if I have another option rather than the typical stirrups at the time of pushing. I was talking to a lady (who was due anyday) at Sonic last night, and she said that she had her other two children naturally at a birthing center. She could not see anyone being able to birth naturally in that upwards position. I really hope that the hospital staff will let gravity work with me, rather than against me. I have read that just sitting up or squatting during the pushing stage opens the birthing canal at least 30% more than just lying there. The lady I talked to, (who is also an RN) said that there is no reason why I cannot have the iv fluids and walk around. I have also seen much wisdom in having a birthing plan. (For a helpful website which helps you make a birth plan, visit here.) She said that if your doctor is willing to follow your birth plan, then it is very useful. If your doctor is antagonistic about natural birth, then the birth plan is void. One website which has been such a blessing to me during my pregnancy has been Fruitful Vines. It is written by a dear sister in Christ, who is also a doula. She has a terrific way of centering the birthing process around the Scriptures, and has a very beautiful relationship with our Lord. To read a beautiful Bradley Birth story (hospital birth) visit here. Blessings to you!

Healthy Children's Vitamins
For the past couple of months, my littles have been using these wonderful, life-giving vitamins. They contain so many vital nutrients, such as spirulina, spinach leaf powder, alfalfa grass powder, royal jelly, brown rice bran, grape seed, and ginger root. (just to name a few) My children were on another natural, health-food store vitamin, prior to this, but I have seen that this is much one is much more potent. Lily's hair has always had a hard time growing, but lately I have been noticing how vibrant and long it is getting! (Even though she uses the same shampoo, as before.) It is so important that we continue to give our children life-nourishing foods and vitamins, so they can be mighty (and healthy) warriors for Christ! Lily takes one of the "lilypad" vitamins a day and Stevie takes half of one. Blessings to you!

Frugal Maternity Clothes
Though I am expecting my third baby, this is my first "summer baby". I did not want to spend much on maternity clothes, so I tried to think "outside the box". First of all, I bought the ready made denim skirt fabric from Walmart and sewed the seam, so I would have a versatile skirt to wear. (Walmart was getting rid of all fabric, so I got this at a nice discount.) I went to K-Mart and looked in their maternity section. A simply maternity t-shirt was $10 and up. So I went to the regular ladies' shirts section, and I tried to see how I could make do with what they had. I am rather petite, so I dislike wearing huge clothing. But I was happy to find "relaxed fit" shirts in medium size, which cover my belly very nicely. They give me ample room to cover my abdomen, and the short sleeves don't hang down too far either. I purchased two of these "relaxed fit" medium shirts for $5 a piece. (They were half off.) My best frugal tip for maternity clothes shopping is to think outside the box and find a way to make something cheaper work for you. For more Frugal Fridal ideas, visit here

My Silly Lily
Lily is a true collector of all things nature-wise. She carries a 10 lb. purse, which she loves to stuff with rocks, bricks, and twigs. I am constantly having to purge certain items out of her purse. But today, she went even further than I thought by smuggling an egg into the house! I was completely horrified and shocked when I saw it, but then all I could do is laugh. This girl will stop at nothing when it comes to finding special "treasures". I am bracing for what might hatch or slither out of her purse next! Blessings to you!

I am not a medical professional in any way. I am just sharing some helpful herbal information, which I have gleaned from the internet and from other sources. I think there is much wisdom in utilizing the herbs which God has given us, to restore our body to optimal functioning and health. I speak from experience in birthing, that red raspberry leaf tea is nothing short of miraculous in the way it tones one's uterus for birth. I hope that this is helpful to you. Blessings!

25 Weeks !
I am so thankful that God has blessed me with a very healthy pregnancy and baby. We are getting so eager, with each passing day, to meet this sweet baby. Last night, I watched a dvd from the library, which was a National Geographic movie, called In the Womb. It was an amazing glimpse into the life of an unborn baby. Please pray for me during these final 15 weeks, that I will surrender this birth to the Lord, in all ways. Please also pray that I will turn to Him constantly during labor. My next pre-natal appointment is April 2. We can do nothing, by ourselves. It is only Him who can strengthen us to do anything. Have a joyful spring day, as you delight yourself in the Lord!

WFMW: Naptime Activity for Older Children
About 6 months ago, my daughter "outgrew" taking a daily nap at naptime. I have received much wise advice (from Titus 2 mothers) that a daily naptime/quiet time ought to continue, indefinitely, for all children. Sometimes it is hard to keep little ones busy during this time, but I find it helpful to allow certain items to only be used during naptime. I let Lily play quietly with her tangram puzzles, lacing cards, and books. Also, I am going to start letting her listen to books on tape, such as Heidi. This way, she will have enough good activities to keep her busy, yet she will still have a resting time. For more Works for me Wednesday ideas, visit here.

Redeeming the Time
"See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil." (Ephesians 5:15-16) This is a very critical command in Scripture that we must be careful to redeem the time, which we have been given. One way which I have been led to redeem the time, is to focus on the Lord as much as possible, while I go about my chores. I can do this by praying interiorly, listening/singing hymns,
or even listening to the Bible on cd. Also, it is very helpful to check out good books on tape or cd from the library, and listen to them. Pilgrims Progress and Christiana are two wonderful books to read/listen to. They are so helpful in leading us in our Christian walk. Sometimes, just having an open Bible on a table, to which we can glean jewels, can be such an aid amidst life's daily trials. As a stay at home mother and wife, I am so blessed to be able to read and listen to edifying materials as I go about my daily business. Tasks are so much lovelier when we focus on our Sovereign Lord. It is also a good example to our children to sing hymns joyfully while cleaning. May we do everything out of abundant love for our Savior, who died out of utter love for us.

Mama and Lily in their Denim Skirts
I love how my sweet little Lily loves wearing clothes to match me. We bought her this denim skirt a few weeks ago, for her birthday. Also, she did not own any skirts, and this one is so versatile. I am so blessed to have such a little sweetheart, from the Lord. Blessings!

Isn't it lovely with spring blooming all over the place? We purchased some beautiful hanging baskets with lavender and pink impatiens in them. We now have two bird feeders on our porch, and two hanging baskets. It is so lovely to see the blooming flowers and the feeding birds. What a blessing! I had to take a shot of my favorite little spring/summer/fall niche, my rocking chair and my little table. It is perfect for putting a glass of sweet tea or lemonade (though I need to avoid both right now) and some reading material. It is a lovely spot to just contemplate. Blessings to you!

Friday Dinner

We were so blessed to visit with some dear friends (from church) of ours, on Friday. They have a sweet little 16 month old son, and they are expecting their second child, in October. The weather was so warm and confortable and we had a lovely time. True friends in Christ are such a blessing!

Edifying Reading Material
When I was so privileged to attend the National Conference for Family Integrated Churches in April of 2005, I was so edified to hear Dave Black speak. When he spoke, he teased Scott Brown that though his quotes from spiritual leaders, such as Martin Luther, were nice, they are nothing compared to the unadulterated Word of God. (Dear Scott, who simply loves the Bible, wholeheartedly agreed.) I love reading books by the great spiritual giants, such as Spurgeon. But nothing compares to feasting on the pure Word of God! Dave Black wrote this article, which so eloquently puts it into perspective. The Bible alone is a Living Book! It contains the Words of a Living God. Any other theological work, which we might read, is only to complement the Bible. All writings are nothing compared to the Word of the Lord. For this reason, it is so important that we make Bible reading a priority in our daily lives. Through the reading of His Word, God both convicts and encourages His children. It was at that conference that I first realized the importance of reading through the Bible, yearly. To do so, we only need to read 3 chapters a day, and 5 chapters on the Lord's Day. I am amazed at the fact that one can read the Bible so many times, and yet glean so many gems, every time. May you delight in feasting on the delicacies of His Word. Blessings to you!
"Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you." James 4:8

Today, I am thankful for so many things. God has so abundantly blessed our family in a multitude of ways. We are so unworthy of the Love of the Father!
* I am thankful for the blessing of godly, likeminded friends, with whom we get to fellowship with together, tomorrow evening.
* I am thankful for my daughter's love of books, and how she is willing to listen to several in one sitting.
* I am thankful for the big smiles and comfort which I receive from both of my children, whenever I am upset or not feeling well. It is amazing that little people can be so consoling!
* I am thankful that my husband is such a diligent worker, and that he helps others so often. He uses his skills constantly to help others, whether they can compensate him or not.
* I am thankful for the blessing of being part of a likeminded, family-integrated church.
* I am thankful for the Bible, which is a lamp unto my feet.
Blessings to you. For more Thankful Thursdays, visit Iris.

More Wednesday Night Fun with Cousins

Stevie kept having a ball with an old "thighmaster" which he found at my sister-in-law's house. He thought he was building big muscles. What a ham! They had so much fun!

Enjoy the first day of Spring with a Free Coffee!

Dunkin Donuts is giving away free 16 oz. iced coffees all day today, to herald in spring. I love how this is available all day, today, rather than the two hour drinks giveaway at Starbucks last week. I hope you are able to seize this great opportunity.

Works for Me Wednesday: Sorting Activity Equipped with just a .97 dinner tray (available from Walmart) and some dried Wacky Mac pasta, I realized what a wonderful sorting activity I had on hand for my children. I have them sort them into separate sections, to help them with shapes, color, and texture, and logical order. You can use small bowls, cups, or any other household items for your children to sort things in. Use whatever you have on hand, whether it is M & M's, beans, etc.. Use what works for you. It is such a fun activity. Afterwords (if you are daring enough) you can let them use the shapes to paint on paper. Enjoyable learning with my children definitely works for me! A Wise Woman from a Full House!
In my youth, I spent far too much time watching tv. I loved reading, but I also loved watching all of the seemingly fun sitcoms. I marvel now at the "children superstars" from my era, who actually have turned into godly men and women. Kirk Cameron (Growing Pains) , Candace Cameron Bure (Full House), and Lisa Whelchel (Facts of Life) stand out as three phenomenal Christian examples. I was so blessed to see that Candace Cameron Bure is not afraid to proclaim a woman's proper role. I have been so disheartened lately by Christian women who proclaim that submission to their husbands is not a biblical principle. I have only read the Bible through 1 1/2 times (so far), but I see a theme of male headship over his wife everywhere, starting from the book of Genesis. It is one thing to admit it is there, and simply not follow it. That is blatant disobedience and a disordered relationship with God. I struggle with submitting, sometimes, but I will admit that it is something I need God to teach me. I still beg Him to give me a submissive spirit, and it is something He is working in me. (If I said I was accomplishing it, I would be lying; my works of righteousness are as filthy rags.) Are women just not admitting it or do they genuinely not see it as being obligatory? My heart breaks for these dear sisters in Christ, as there will be no harmony in marriage if the woman does not understand her role. God has just shown me to pray for these dear women. To read Candace's biblical response regarding submission, visit here.
Bonnet tip to Kim.

Tuesday Tackle: Shoe Rack
Somehow, as children put their shoes away, the shoe rack just never stays as tidy as I would wish. (Ok, ok, so some of that sloppiness is me too!) How is it that even when I try to periodically purge old shoes, they tend to multiply on my shoe rack? If only the shoe rack would grow as the shoe supply grows! Anyways, I also removed outgrown shoes and put them in a rubbermaid tub.

Bi-Monthly Grocery Shopping
One beneficial thing which we have recently implemented in my house, is bi-monthly grocery shopping. I make a dinner menu for two weeks, and I make a corresponding grocery list. I also make sure that I have plenty of ingredients to make breakfasts and lunches. I have found that bi-monthly grocery shopping is just right for me. Once a week came too frequently, and I cannot go just once a month or I will never have fresh fruits and vegetables. This weekend, we shopped at Aldi and Walmart. The combined total was $69.97, so that averages to $34.98 per week. We probably spent about $15 in extra (non-necessary) food purchases, so we could have done better. Sometimes it is just so nice to have these little luxuries on hand, to prevent us spending too much while out!

My absolute favorite cooking resource has been this lovely cookbook, which was compiled by the Welch family. Their daughter, Valerie Grace, has cancer, and this dear family is planning on moving to Ecuador soon to help start an orphanage. Their hearts are very Christ-centered and it is so inspiring. Their cookbook is full of delicious recipes and Bible verses. The recipes this week, which I am taking from their cookbook are the Sesame Chicken nuggets, the Baked Mac and Cheese, and the amazing Lemon Bars. Anytime I serve one to a guest, they are in awe! These are absolutely wonderful. (which I credit to the amazing recipe.) The cookbooks are $15 with free shipping. Proceeds go towards the Ecuadorian Orphanage. Please check out this culinary treasure.

My sweet Babies on my Birthday Stephen gave Lily and Stevie some old glasses, scarves, and a belt which he found from when he and his siblings were little. I think they look simply smashing in them!

Our Lovely Weekend
My dear hubby and I enjoying a scrumptious breakfast on my birthday! We were able to eat in the gorgeous sunroom at the inn. We did not choose our breakfast, but we were served a huge meal, which included scrambled eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, a bowl of fruit, pancakes, coffee, and orange juice. I am definitely not used to eating that much in the morning, but it was delicious. This is only my second time at a bed and breakfast and I love how diverse they each are! This particular inn was run by a Hispanic couple, and they were so hospitable. They opened all of their cabinets and refrigerator doors, and said that we should help ourselves to anything. The other bed and breakfast we stayed at (on our honeymoon) was owned by a British couple. They were more apt to close off more of the house to us, but they tended to make gourmet food. They also served high tea. I have found that Bed and Breakfasts are as diverse as the people who own them. Each time, it is like a cultural experience. You take away so much from your visit than just a typical hotel stay. This inn even had some rooms where families could stay, which I thought was just lovely!

This was a lovely sitting room right outside of our bedroom. We were on the second floor.

This was a beautiful picture on the wall, which I just had to capture because it is very much my style.

This Victorian room was so elegant.

This is the second floor porch. It was cold on that day, but I can only imagine how lovely it would be with a glass of sweet tea on a warm day.

This is the view from the top balcony.

This is the parking area. The Bradford Pear trees were in full bloom and it was absolutely enchanting.
This is the gorgeous sunroom, off of the back of the house. Sunrooms are my absolute favorite places. They add so much zest, dimension, and style to a home. Have a blessed Sunday! I hope you enjoyed a peek into our lovely weekend.

Friday was very rainy and cold here. But a lovely gift of cheery daisies, from my friend, Kelly, truly brightened my day. A picture truly can not do this flower arrangement justice; it is just that lovely!

Finally Friday!
This is the day I have been waiting for! Tomorrow (St.Patrick's Day), is my birthday, the big 26! I will be over a quarter of a century old! I have always loved having my birthday on such a fun day, but hubby says it is just a drinking day. I still think it is fun to be festively green on March 17th! I am so blessed to be able to go out to dinner tonight with my dear husband. Then, we will be able to stay at the nearby Bed and Breakfast. My sweetheart wanted me to enjoy a homemade breakfast at the inn, tomorrow on my birthday. Although my dear husband planned this little vacation last week, the timing is impeccable. I have barely seen him this whole week because he has had to be in charge of his company's move. Not only did they have to move themselves, but he had to move the old church out, which was in their new building. They simply would not leave. So Stephen's boss had to pay for the church's storage. (Just out of the kindness of his heart and to motivate them.) Poor Stephen is so worn out from driving a monster U-Haul van all week, and loading and unloading so many heavy things. He said the van drives like it has square tires. Ugh! I know this is just selfishness on my part, but sometimes I wish he was not so good at everything he does. He is always on demand. His cell phone never stops ringing unless it is off. (And then he deals with a million voicemails) Anyways, this time to just be together is such a precious gift. He has been too busy to talk to me on the phone, and he had been staying out late trying to fix his car one night this week. Thanks be to God, he and his brother-in-law replaced the wheel bearing before it completely broke. Stephen saved a lot of money by doing it himself, it just was so time-consuming. I have had to run too many errands every day this week. I love just staying home. I pray that next week brings some normalcy! I have also been having a lot of stomach pains since Wednesday, and I have been extra hormonal.( I was worried for a while that I was miscarrying, but baby is active. I think I might still have some lingering stomach bug effects.) So this trip will be wonderful. We are only going away for the night, but it will be a lovely trip. My sister-in-law so graciously agreed to watch our little sweeties. I love how she is fun for them, yet she is also strict. Not too bad for a 19 year old! Lily is so happy that her Aunt Margaret will be sleeping in her top bunk bed tonight! The above picture is from Lily's birthday celebration at Chick Fil A, last Friday. Stephen and I were watching Lily and Stevie play in the play area, and we were able to chat a bit. A family with 5 children (with one on the way) were helping our children in the play area. A little boy kept lifting Stevie up so he could play on the equipment. That family acted like "the more, the merrier". How fun! I love it when children love playing together and help each other out. Have a delightful weekend! Blessings!

True Education
As homeschool parents, there are so many important lessons which we so desparately want our children to learn. I want to model for my children the fact that I am always learning something new, even though my formal education was done long ago. I have learned far more post-graduation, than in all of my years of schooling. These past (almost) 5 years of marriage, I have learned so much about homemaking, growing in the Lord, and parenting. Like many women in modern America, I was not raised with the goal of me being a wife and mother, some day. So I had to read books, and learn wherever I could to fill in for my lack of knowledge. I have tried to challenge myself to try something new every week, whether it is a new recipe, way of gardening, or organizational tip. I always try to model for my children a love for learning. I am always eager to read on a variety of topics. Right now, I am reading The Bronze Bow, a terrific piece of historic fiction (around the time of Christ) to broaden my mind. (I only endeaver to broaden my mind in good ways, I do not mean it in the liberal usage we find today.)
Giving up because of failure, can be a very big obstacle to learning much. This is not always easy for me, as I am a perfectionist at heart. When I fail at something once or twice, I am more than willing to "hang it up" for good. But never giving up is a critical lesson, which I want my children to learn. This past year, I have undertaken trying to make a nice pie crust. Everytime, I worked so diligently, following every step of the recipe and I constantly ended up with a mess. It was crumbly, tasted terrible, and simply would not cooperate. My dear husband encouraged me not to give up, and said that I just needed to find a recipe that worked for me. After about a year of trying, finally, this past week, I found a terrific recipe which worked well for me. My husband had been out late working that night (on his vehicle), and I was already in bed when he came home. I heard him go into the kitchen, and eat some pot pie. He said that he noticed that that was the best pot pie he had ever had. Even though I had my easy way out waiting for me (my refrigerated pie crust), I told myself to try yet again, to make a delicious pie crust. There is no greater satisfaction than struggling so many times, and finally being victorious. I want my children to never ever give up.
One of my favorite examples of someone who is not afraid of failure and who is always willing to learn something new, is my father-in-law. Though he is in his 50's, he is always learning. He constantly checks out a plethora of library books, to learn new things. He loves learning what/how to pickle almost anything. He has a large, gorgeous herb garden, so when he cooks a roast, he can use fresh herbs and spices. None of the old dried store-bought herbs for him! His pastor once said that if his dog required surgery, and he could not afford it, he would have Stephen's dad study what needed to be done, and he would have him do it. He is just that versatile! My father-in-law once had to leave early to go home (when we were all out one evening) because he had to get home to make some fresh sourdough bread. I love it when people challenge themselves and constantly grow. I love my children to observe this trait in others.
May we always remember how important our job is to model so many important traits to our blessings! Have a joyful day in Him!

Wednesday Family Nights

Every Wednesday night, before my mother and father-in-law attend their Wednesday night church services, the whole family meets for supper. (usually at my sister-in-law's house, who lives closest to the church) We all take turns cooking for the whole extended family, so each smaller family usually has to cook once a month. It is a great time of fun and fellowship. Our children love playing with their 4 cousins. (ages 12, 9, 7, and 5) Most of Lily and Stevie's cousins stayed at my sister-in-law's, last night, rather than going to church clubs, so they were able to play together for a longer period of time. Last night, we enjoyed barbecue chicken (from the grill), coleslaw, baked beans, and some Southern sweet tea! Our church does not have services on Wednesday nights, so as to allow for more family time. We are encouraged to share family worship together each evening with our own households. This is a wonderful way to bond. Blessings to you.

Free Starbucks Coffee Break!
If you are planning on running some errands tomorrow, you might want to stop into your local Starbucks between 10 a.m.-12 noon. Nationwide, they will be giving away free 12 oz. coffees during those two hours. To check the website , visit here. What could be better than a scrumptious, "on the house" coffee? Hmmm...maybe a free book too! (I can dream, can't I) Blessings!

Works for me Wednesday: Free Alphabet Notebook Printables
One of my favorite resources in my homeschool, are the myriad of free printables, which are available online. I plan on making an Alphabet binder/notebook for each of my children. Jan Brett's website has a plethora of (free) superlative resources for schooling, which are lovely because of her beautiful illustrations. She even has handwriting worksheets for practicing writing. I am sure you will find her site delightful with the educational games, worksheets, and coloring pages therein. I am amazed at how much you can teach your children for free! Have a blessed day!
