Jesus, The Light to Direct our Way

So many times I am frustrated with myself because of the constant struggle it is to overcome my sinfulness. With all of my heart I want to always do right and to be a light to the world. But when I start to feel my sinful weaknesses start to rise within me, I feel tempted to despair. But it is in these moments that our Lord beckons me to come unto Him and to cling to Him. Just as nothing in the physical world can survive or thrive without light, no one can spiritually live without the Light of Jesus. He is to be the sunlight to our souls causing us to be revived from our dark ways. Jesus said, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."(John 8:12) The moment that we need Him most is the moment we feel we are the furthest away from him. Sometimes I can be reluctant to run to Him when I feel that I have already failed, but that is when I need to hasten to him swiftly. He alone can direct my weary and oft wandering soul.

No Greater Love
My husband and I recently viewed The End of the Spear movie about Jim Elliot and the other missionaries to the Waodani people. Though this movie is a little hard to watch, (the tribal people in it dress like real tribal people and the martyrdoms are graphic) it has truly shown me what a precious treasure missionaries are. They sacrifice so much to give the Word of God to those who are on the road to hell. Missionaries who are actively serving God with all their hearts have their priorities straight. They know that real joy is not found in having a stately mansion or in accumulating earthly wealth. Their joy is in leading lost souls to the Lord. This is no easy task. Many spend years just trying to learn the native language of the people. Communication is extremely difficult with these tribes. Sometimes it takes decades to even get a church started. But these dear missionaries know a very important truth, that now is the moment. Life is extremely short and hell stands before these lost souls. Missionaries sacrifice being in their own country with their dear families and friends, for pagan strangers. Why? The only answer I hear them say is because God loved them when they were in their horrible sinful state. He loved them too much to leave them in such a state, so He sent His Precious, Perfect, Innocent Son to die on their behalf. His Love is so overwhelmingly powerful. It affected them so much that they want others to experience it and to be changed. Please pray and fast for these dear souls. They lay down their lives daily so that others may live eternally. Our church supports some dear missionaries, the Flaugher Family. Please pray for them and visit their website when you get the chance. (www.flaugherfamily.org) The webpage of their mission partners is very inspirational too! (www.mcclains.net)

Helpful Homeschooling Ideas
I have been so blessed today listening to Cindy Rushton, a homeschooling mom on her Mom to Mom radio show. She has many recorded talks that you can listen to for free on her website. (www.momtomomradioshow.com) The show that I listened to is about notebooking. What a great idea for adding some individuality and some zing to your homeschool. This method can be used even if you are using a primary curriculum. I heartily encourage you to listen to her message. How about listening as you go about some chores?
What I love about notebooking is that your child picks a theme of interest and compiles interesting facts, quotes, and pictures on that topic. Your child will love researching things that he finds fascinating. I was amazed to hear that I can start a notebook for Lily even at her young age. I want to save the precious things that she works on.
To view an amazing sample of a lapbook, please see this link: www.homeschoolinthewoods.com/HTTA/TimelineHelps/LapbookPage.htm .
This sample is so beautifully done and demonstrates the creativity involved in notebooking and lapbooking. It shows the 10 commandments, maps, Days of Creation, major and minor prophets, and many other neat details. I know that when I learn this way and have such a resource to reuse, I best retain the information. You can use your computer, books, and even natural resources as your tools.
Letting your children chose what to use as a theme in their lapbook is wise. When they are naturally inclined towards a topic, they will want to learn as much on it as they can. For example, Cindy Rushton's son studies the Civil War in depth in his notebook. (Even though he is a high school graduate, he still enjoys notebooking.) Imagine all the different facets you could explore on this subject! One can study dress, generals, battle locations, weapons, literature, and a whole myriad of items pertaining to just that topic. This is very helpful for cultivating children who are researchers, thinkers, and writers. Perhaps it may lead them into an in depth study on something that may lead to a vocation or a life-long hobby. Make your homeschooling experience a delight!

Homeschooling as a way of life
I am so thankful that God has shown to me, through excellent, godly examples, that I am to teach my children daily. Teaching them ought not to be rigid, but it should come as natural as breathing. Last week, we went to an aquarium as a family. This was such a wonderful teaching experience. Our children learned so much merely by observing the captivating fish and other sea creatures. One sign said, "Why does mother nature make such colorful looking fish?" All I could think about and tell my children was, "Look at the amazing creativity of our God." I could not help but turn their little hearts and minds towards their Creator.
I find this to be extremely important because God commands parents to instruct their children in Deuteronomy 6. "And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up." (Deuteronomy 6:7) We are to seize the opportunity to teach them first and foremost to love the Lord with "all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." We are also to teach them about the world God made.
Recently, I ordered Lily a few workbooks for three year olds. They are to help her to learn the basics of drawing straight lines and other writing fundamentals. She had an extremely hard time and was not ready yet. So I put the workbooks away until I feel she is more mature. If it is stressing us both out and making us frustrated, it is not God's Will. I want her to love learning. If I make it dull and dry, she will be burnt out and despise learning. How I want her to savor learning throughout her whole life!
I feel that God wants me to teach my daughter as naturally as I can. She is very bright and will learn things as long as she does not feel the stress of being forced to learn. She adores books and I try reading a lot to her throughout the day. I try to pick excellent reading materials rather than "twaddle". I read to my children a Proverb a day along with another passage in Scripture. I
have made Lily a bible memory booklet with her verse to learn. She is so precious reciting and acting out her verse.
Recently, I purchased a field guide teaching how to identify birds. When the children and I take a walk with me, we can bring the guide along and learn about the birds we meet. (I love the vast assortment of guides that you can find on subjects such as: birds, insects, butterflies/moths, and trees) I want them to experience nature firsthand. This is the way our Lord intends for parents to teach their children. One can make almost any trip into a learning adventure.
Lily enjoys learning about numbers by counting out beans or playing with an abacus. We count animals in books and play with a vast assortment of manipulatives. In the midst of all of this, Lily thinks she and mommy are just having fun. This type of learning is not such a chore to her.
This past weekend, Lily and Stephen learned so much at the beach. They enjoyed finding shells and I tried teaching them the difference in textures. They seem to better understand rough and smooth. They enjoyed learning the basics of fishing. They got to see up close the crab and fish mommy and daddy caught.
I try to include Lily in many of the household duties since she will (Hopefully) one day be a wife and mother. She loves helping me prepare the meals. She loves sweeping up the kitchen. Earlier today, she thoroughly scrubbed down one of my showers. Bless her heart, it has never sparkled so! There are so many things she is learning at the mere age of three that I have only recently learned. So many people graduate from high school not knowing these invaluable skills!
Imagine the potential our children have to learn a vast amount on any number of subjects. Homeschooling grants you the luxory to find and pursue interests unique for each child. So many children at such early ages learn about farming, crafts, homekeeping, music, and art because they have been surrounded by these things. It is essential that we challenge ourselves to learn more and to teach what we learn. I have even heard of a young child who prepares the room for her mama before she births. She gathers the necessary supplies and loves helping.
One of the most critical elements in educating children is cultivating their imagination. They need ample, unhindered free-time to best cultivate their imaginations. Also, read books to them which encourage imagination. (Like original Fairy Tales) Albert Einstein said if you want bright children, read them fairy tales. If you want extremely intelligent children, read them more fairy tales. One cannot reap a vast imagination if nothing has been sown to reap from.
There are so many beneficial ideas for free play for your children. Take a few pieces of lumber and purchase some play sand and make a large sand box. Plant a tree together. Hang a bird house. Make models of planes, cars, trains, etc. together. (Visit Hobby Lobby for a vast assortment of crafts.) Don't just buy your produce pre-packaged; pick your next bushel of blueberries from a farmer's field. Take your children to a farm for a field trip.
Rather than reading dull Geography facts from a book, read exciting books about diverse places to your children. As Americans, we are definitely in a comfort zone. Read missionary stories to your children to educate them about geography and God's Heart for diverse people. Help your children to think outside the rut. Hang a laminated world map in your home and mark on it where certain missionaries live(d). When a world event happens, show and mark its locale on the map. Teach them about directions, maps, seasons, and clouds.
If you are feeling stressed out with your current homeschooling methods, maybe you might need to recharge. Maybe use one day a week to visit a nursing home or to go on a field trip. Homeschoolers are blessed to have the opportunity to "think outside the box". Let's remember the big picture and seize the moment to teach our children something new, today!

Self-Discipline
I don't know if you are like me, but I find it very difficult to finish a project after a while. While I purchase supplies or work on it initially, I will be most enthusiastic. But after I work on my craft for a while, I get bored with it. A few months ago, I was talking to a relative who gave me much wisdom in this regard. She said that as Christians, we ought to always finish every task we undertake. The discipline to complete a begun task is essential for a Christian. If it is worth starting, it is worth finishing. This will help us ultimately in persevering through trials towards the finishing goal. "Let us run with patience the race that was set before us." (Hebrews 12:1)

What is your favorite Cleaning Product?
Odd as it may seem, my favorite cleaning product is. . . a toothbrush! Now, in my youth, I would have considered cleaning with a toothbrush to be a terrible form of penance. But as a happy housewife, I relish a device that helps me scrub the tricky recesses of my home. I cannot think of anything that would pick up grout so well around the sink or in the tub. I also use it when scrubbing my kitchen floor. (I don't use it on the whole floor, just the little nooks around the cabinets) I would love for you to share what your favorite cleaning products are. (even if they were not originally intended for that purpose) When you do dispose your toothbrush, please don't tell me about it. . . I might get all choked up.

Consider the Lilies...
In this age of instant gratification, it can be difficult to cultivate a spirit of contentment. But I have noticed in my own life, that when I covet, I make myself miserable. Whereas, when I rejoice in the blessings the Lord has bestowed on me, I am full of joy and peace. There are so many verses that we should fill our hearts with to help us root out covetousness, and to replace it with it's corresponding virtue, contentment. (Of course, only our Lord can do this work within us)

"But godliness with contentment is great gain." -1 Timothy 6:6
"Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." -Hebrews 13:5
"Would to God that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan."
-Joshua 7:7
"For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content." -I Timothy 6:7-8
Imagine the fact that God has always met our needs! I am 25 years old, and every day of my life, God has provided food for me. I have lived for over 9,125 days. . . and He has always given me the necessities of life and more! How blessed we are, and how rarely we contemplate it!Next time we are tempted to pity ourselves and desire another's goods, let us rejoice in His blessings.

A Lovely Anniversary with my Sweetheart
Yesterday, my husband and I celebrated our fourth anniversary. Stephen and I had such a lovely evening together. My sister-in-law graciously offered to watch our children for a few hours, so my hubby and I could enjoy dinner together. We went to one of my favorite country- style restaurants, Cracker Barrel. He and I enjoyed a cozy, country breakfast for dinner. Although there was a terrible storm outside, it made it so charming inside the restaurant. They lit all the oil lamps on the tables and made it quite elegant.
After our lovely dinner, we went to a coffee shop and took a little stroll together. I am just so blessed to have such a dear husband. He always gives me his strength when I am full of worries. I am just so blessed that God has given me a husband with such a big heart. I am quite unworthy of his love.
I recently found out that June 8th (our anniversary) is also best friend's day. How fitting that I can celebrate both events with the same person. What a blessing it is to be married to such a sweetheart. I pray that God will give us many years to share together.

Pure Religion
"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world." (James 1:27) Where can one find the fatherless and widows in one location? a nursing home. If you are able to spend time with these dear souls, you will be blessed abundantly. I need to visit them, I have not been on nursing home visitation since my youth. I can attest to the fact that visiting the elderly is the perfect remedy for the narcisstic tendencies of teenagers. When I was consumed with myself, how it helped me to see the sorrows of the elderly. It put so many things in proper perspective for me. I would worry about some difficult exam, but they showed me how to stand firm amidst true trials. On one occasion, I met a lady who could not cease crying because she was going to have her leg amputated the next day. She thought she was extremely selfish to cry over it. My little adolescent worries turned to dust in light of her suffering. What a blessing that we can be a balm of comfort to these dear souls! They are so precious to the Lord that He considers it "pure religion" to visit them in their afflictions. "We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak." (Romans 15:1)

Be Women "Full of Good Works"
I was deeply blessed while reading the biblical account of Tabitha/Dorcas. (Acts 9:32-43) Tabitha was such a radiant example of biblical femininity, a woman "full of good works." When she died , the widows wept bitterly, holding the garments she made them. She had been such a blessing to them and her loss was sorely felt. This challenged me to think of my own life. Do I live for myself or do I help others in their needs? May Jesus work "good works" in us and inspire us to be generous towards our neighbor. May we be a Tabitha to all whom we meet.
"And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore the opportunity, let us do good to all men, especially unto them that are of the household of faith." (Galatians 6:9-10)

Memorial Day
My family and I had a wonderful time at Scott Brown's farm (www.brownfamilyfarm.org) on Memorial Day. We were so blessed to spend time together at such a heavenly place. We brought eleven family members with us. Though it was a very hot and humid day, sitting under a shade tree and fellowshipping with each other was delightful. We were able to preview Vision Forum's new movie, A League of Grateful Sons. I heartily recommend this superlative movie to you. It is very inspirational and is of an exceptional caliber.
We loved hearing the veteran's testimonies. Bill Henderson particularly touched my heart when he talked about partial birth believers. He said when he was younger, he gave only one room in his heart to Jesus. But now, he said his heart is like Biltmore Estate, with its 230 rooms, and all of those rooms in his heart belong solely to Jesus Christ. He is a true example and inspiration! Isn't it rare to meet someone who makes you want to worship God with every fiber of your being? I am just so blessed to have heard his testimony!
How blessed we were to share Memorial Day in a delightful way. I hope yours was just as lovely as mine was!
